5 CCP candidates have criminal cases against them

Five candidates contesting elections to the Corporation of the City of Panaji have serious criminal cases while 19 others in fray are corepatis.

According to data compiled by the Association for Democratic Reforms 61 candidates have educational qualifications of grade 12 and below while 29 are graduates and above.

Speaking to media, State coordinator Bhasker Assoldekar said the aim of revealing such information was for the benefit voters to make an informed decision while casting their votes.

“We are not drawing any conclusions from the information we have analysed but are giving it to the public so that they know what their candidates have declared in their affidavits,” said Assoldekar.

Wendy Hazel D Souza has total assets worth Rs 6 crore followed by Lorraine Dias who has Rs 5 crore worth assets and Manoj Patil also with assets worth Rs 5 crore. Assoldekar stated that affidavits do not reveal the immovable assets of the candidates.

Those who have declared that they have criminal cases filed under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) relating to attempt to murder, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, criminal intimidation include Sandip Tukaram Vaigankar (10 cases), Uday Vaman Madkaikar (7 cases), Dayanand Anant Karapurkar (6 cases), Krishna Ramdas Shirodkar (6 cases) and Nelson Cabral (1 case).

Data also revealed that 60 per cent of those contesting were male while the rest were females.

Two candidates have declared their age to be below 25 years. 76 (80%) candidates have declared their age to be between 25 to 50 years while 19 (20%) candidates have declared their age to be between 51 to 70 years.

The compilation has also listed names and assets owned by each of the 95 contesting candidates as mentioned in affidavits attached to their nomination forms. The same information has also been uploaded on websites including myneta.info and adrindia.org.
