Stolen ornaments recovered from bank

PANAJI: Panaji Police on Wednesday recovered gold ornaments deposited with Muthoot Finance Ltd at Taleigao, Panaji by accused Jaya Martin Fernandes, 39, who was arrested on the previous day in a robbery case registered on February 23, at the residence of her neighbor Balraj Nandrekar, 41, in municipal quarters, Camrabhatt, Taleigao.

Panaji police informed that the accused deposited the ornaments with Muthoot Finance under her maiden name Jaya Sadre, concealing her identity and obtained a gold loan of Rs 43,000.

Office bearers of Muthoot Finance were interrogated over their failure to verify and confirm the source of these ornaments and some staff members have been summoned for further inquiry into such negligent conduct of transactions.

Panaji police informed that this is a new system adopted by thieves to conveniently dispose of stolen gold ornaments whereby they obtain gold loan under fictitious names.

PSI Arun Gawas Desai of Panaji police is investigating the matter.
