PERNEM
Seven young women were rescued in a raid on a massage parlour by Mandrem police following intense public pressure to crackdown on prostitution activities at Arambol beach.
Following the operation, one head constable and one constable from the Mandrem police station were transferred to the Reserve Force.
Locals had complained about prostitution activities at Arambol beach and had accused the police of failing to take action in the matter. They had also submitted representations to the police and the Arambol panchayat demanding action against prostitution activities.
Bowing to growing public pressure, Mandrem police raided a massage parlour in Arambol and rescued seven young women, while also taking three suspects into custody.
According to Mandrem police, three accused, Sanju Kumar of Uttar Pradesh, Shibani Das of West Bengal and Paresh Bhati of Gujarat, had allegedly induced the seven victims to engage in prostitution and had received the proceeds from their prostitution through their prospective customers.
In a related development, Rajesh Shirgaonkar and Sarvesh Mandrekar from the Mandrem police were reported to have been transferred to the Reserve Force, following an order issued by the North Goa Superintendent of Police.
It is understood that the action to transfer the police was taken after locals expressed anger with the Mandrem police for not taking action to crack down on the prostitution activities despite repeated complains.
Locals have claimed that the mastermind in the case is still at large, and has been running other businesses at Mandrem beach.
