Eyebrows are being raised in the commercial capital over the continuance of the Holy Spirit feast fair with the Shadow Council for Margao wondering whether the Margao Municipal Council has authority over the Sopo contractor or whether it is the Sopo contractor whose instructions are followed by the Council.
The Holy Spirit feast fair was scheduled to end on December 14 as per the agreement between the MMC and the Contractor.
The fair, however, was given an extension for two days, which expired on Saturday.
However, sources said the vendors made brisk business at the fair on Sunday as well with the Municipal officials enjoying the weekly day off.
MMC officials were not available for comment to shed light on how the fair could continue even on Sunday when the contractors and the vendors were supposed to dismantle the temporary structures on Saturday.
Margao Municipal acting Chairperson Tito Cardozo told The Goan late on Sunday evening that instructions have been issued to the Civic officials to get the contractor to dismantle the temporary structures at the fair.
Shadow Council of Margao Convenor Savio Coutinho alleged that the Holy Spirit feast fair, was very convincingly allotted to a contractor for 12 lakhs, ie. 6 lakhs short as compared to previous year's 18 lakhs collection.
"Municipal land was blatantly handed over to the contractor, with no conditions whatsoever.
"Thus the contractor is enjoying a free hand over the entire municipal land, with freedom to erect as many stalls as possible, with no provision for parking and toilet facilities. Parking finally ended up on the roads and toilets on the footpaths," Coutinho said.
He said the fair which was supposed to be for a initial period of seven days has today completed 10 days with no action forthcoming from the Council.
"The SCM demands that the mess created by the unorganized fair (presently camouflaged by the plastic free angle), should be immediately dismantled and dues be recovered from the contractor," Coutinho said.
He also demanded that the contractor be directed to clear all the residual rubbish from the ground and municipal funds and workforce should not be utilized for the same.
