MARGAO
Even as a residential house at Pockvaddo-Betalbatim was engulfed in a major fire on Tuesday noon destroyed property, including the house and household items, to the tune of Rs 5-7 lakh, brings to the fore the same old question over the absence of a
fire station along Salcete’s coastal belt.
Neighbours and local residents joined in the fire-fighting operation as the fire brigade from the Margao fire station reached the spot after 20 minutes, causing much damage to the house.
The house owner Peter Miranda pointed out that all the belongings, including the household items, furniture and rafters of the houses were destroyed in the fire.
Locals pointed out that neighbours and residents joined in the fire-fighting operation as neighbours helped in making available water.
Nuvem MLA Wilfred D’Sa, who visited the spot along with Betalbatim Sarpanch Constancio Miranda, told the media that he had in the past raised the issue of a fire station for Salcete’s coastal belt in the Goa Legislative Assembly, and will take up the issue in the ensuing session.
“A fire station to meet emergency fire situations along the Salcete coastal belt is a dire necessity given the traffic snarls along the Margao-Betalbatim road. A fire station at the Colva police station would go a long way in helping the fire tender reach out quickly to the fire accident spot within no time,” Wilfred said,
while disclosing plans to pursue the need for a fire station along the Salcete coastal belt.
