Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education recorded a pass percentage of 88.77 per cent at the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) Examination,
this year.
However, the results have witnessed a decrease of 1.33 per cent compared to last year.
Girls have outperformed boys this year once again. Of the 8,608 girls who appeared, 7,806 cleared the examination with a pass percentage of 90.68 per cent, while of the 7,913 boys who answered the examination, 6,860 passed the examination with a total pass percentage of 86.69 per cent.
The HSSC Examination was conducted at 16 centres across the State from March 1 to March 22. In all, 16,521 students had appeared for the examination of which 14,666 cleared.
The Commerce stream recorded the highest pass percentage of 90.70 per cent, followed by the Vocational stream with 88.15 per cent and Science stream with 88.12 per cent. The lowest pass percentage was recorded by the Arts stream with 87.53 per cent.
Nonetheless, three schools have managed to secure 100 per cent results - Mushtifund Aryaan HSS, Panaji, Lokvishwas Pratishthan HSS, Dhavali and Kamaleshwar Shikshan Prasarak Sanstha’s HSS, Korgao, while 20 others have secured a pass percentage of 95 per cent and above.
Addressing a press conference, GBSHSE chairman J R Rebello said, “This is perhaps for the first time that we are declaring the results in the month of April itself before the schools close for their holidays. If you have a recap of the results Goa Board has been producing during the last five years, the number of students has been increasing gradually from 2012 onwards. Only in 2014, there was a decrease which was because of the change in age somewhere in 2002 at the entry level. This year, we had a record of 16,521 students answering, which is nearly 1,200 more than last year.”
Speaking further, he said, “As usual, we have more girls answering the exam and also performing better. There is a difference of four per cent, in spite of more girls answering than the boys.”
In all, 3,266 students availed of the sports merit marks, of which 168 passed the examination with the help of sports merit marks.
“This shows that 1.02 per cent was the contribution of sports to the HSS pass percentage,” he added.
