In a veiled threat to his political foes, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said some individuals involved in illegal business have started to talk too much and directed the police to act tough against those involved in criminal activities.
He also slammed political parties for targeting the police department and asked the cops to “show them their place”.
“Off late, ‘matkekars’ have started making a lot of noise in Colvale. This trend should be curbed…Crime rate should be brought down and to do that police will have to play a big role,” Sawant said, in presence of top state police officials including the DGP Mukesh Kumar Meena.
The Chief Minister was addressing a gathering at the function to open the new police station in Colvale. Local MLA Nilkant Halarnkar was also present.
Continuing, Sawant said anyone who was involved in any sort of criminal activity should stop doing so or be ready to face police action.
“The police know the cases of everyone. If anyone is involved in any criminal activity they should stop immediately or else strict action will be taken by my department,” he said.
The Chief Minister also hit out at political parties for criticising the police who have been doing an excellent job during the pandemic.
He said he did not mind if politicians criticised him but he would not tolerate anyone censuring his police force.
“What do they think of themselves? The police will have to play a big role to show them their place,” Sawant said.
The new Colvale police station temporarily housed in the WRD quarters has its jurisdiction over eight villages coming under the Tivim constituency.
The new police station will be manned by three PSIs, one lady PSI and other staff under the overall in-charge of PI Vijaykumar Chodankar.
Tivim MLA Nilkant Halarnakar informed that soon after he was elected as an MLA for the second time, he had demanded a separate police station for Tivim.
“At the moment, the police station is housed temporarily in the WRD quarters. We will come up with a new building with all facilities,” Halarnkar said.
DIG Parmaditya, North Goa SP Shobit Saxena, North Goa Collector Ajit Roy, ZP member Diksha Kandolkar, panchayat members and others were also present.
