MARGAO
Welcoming the High Court’s decision to save Sonsodo from a disaster, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai on Tuesday said the court’s action will help protect the drinking water wells in the Fatorda constituency from contamination.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of a sports programme at Fatorda on Tuesday, Sardesai said the High Court is not sleeping and hence has taken certain decisions that will help in saving Sonsodo.
Turning his tirade at the Congress-turned-BJP Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, the Fatorda MLA said the MLA who took photos at Sonsodo with councillors and officials seemed to have gone on a sleep mode.
“What we have seen in recent months is that the MLA from Margao was seen on photos, but no work at Sonsodo. When we were in the government, we had taken then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to Sonsodo to get the legacy dump remediated. The legacy dump and inert was cleared by the Goa Waste Management Corporation and our Margao councillors. The Margao MLA did not help in even disposing of one gram of inert generated at Sonsodo during the remediation,” he said.
Expressing his happiness that the Sonsodo imbroglio has come under the High Court scanner, Sardesai said the decision of the court to fix responsibility in achieving the timelines will go a long way in stopping further contamination of the drinking water wells in his Fatorda constituency.
“Most of the wells in Fatorda constituency have been devastated and contaminated by Sonsodo. I do not know whether this is part of any conspiracy to shut down all wells in my constituency. The powers that be have already done this with the traffic signals in Fatorda for want of upkeep,” he added.
