Activists ensure Merces illegal structure removed

OLD GOA

Activists from Merces Manch Welfare Association forced the dismantling of an alleged illegal structure that was put up in a low-lying area near Shantaban Housing Complex in Merces on Saturday.

The Manch has been involved in a battle to prevent illegalities from happening in the area for the past many years and on Friday after the members noticed a structure being put up in the low-lying area, it immediately notified the Merces panchayat and the Old Goa police.

But, not satisfied that the structure was standing tall, the Manch members met a top police official, on Saturday and apprised him

about inaction by the police in the matter.  “We met the official and informed that concrete action was not forthcoming from the police in the matter,” said Jose Carmino Joao, a member of the Manch.

“The Old Goa police were then directed to act in the matter. They arrived at the site, conducted the panchanama and directed the person concerned to dismantle the structure,” said Joao, while adding that the structure was later dismantled.
