Reduce waste being dumped at Sonsodo: Curtorim residents

MARGAO

Agitated residents of Curtorim have threatened to stop trucks transporting waste from Margao city to the Sonsodo waste dumping site if the Margao Municipal Council does not take adequate steps to reduce the waste dump at the site.

Curtorim panch member Simon Barretto and other residents handed out the threat to the Margao civic body as they have set a 15-day deadline on the municipality to either take concrete steps to reduce the waste at the dump yard or face action.

Simon told the media that the height of the existing waste dumping site has not come down, but has only gone up, only indicating that all is not swell with the civic body’s management of the waste dumping site. “Curtorim residents had to bear the brunt due to the mismanagement of the Sonsodo waste dumping site. And, the situation is only compounded by the fact that instead of reducing the existing dump yard, it has only gone up further,” he said.

While no official deadline has been served on the civic body to take concrete steps to clear the dump yard at the earliest, Simon said the residents will submit a memorandum to the civic body with a plea to resolve the issues at Sonsodo.

The Sonsodo dump yard has again come to the fore as tonnes of unsegregated waste finds its way to the site every day for want of any mechanism set up by the civic body to segregate the waste

at source.

Only recently, the Margao municipality had resolved to award the contract of collecting door-to-door waste in the seven municipal wards falling in Fatorda constituency to a local contractor, but the bigger question of collecting only segregated waste from the city households continues to stare at the civic body.
