VASCO: Activists have voiced concern after the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) got yet another consignment of bauxite at Berth 10, which is very close to the Kharewado fishing jetty.
Sources said the dust emanating from the cargo while being offloaded spread into the nearby fishing trawlers and into the food packets of some labourers on the fishing trawlers.
"This is the second time that this cargo is being brought into the MPT within a month. Dust generated from this cargo is affecting a large portion of Sada. Both BJP MLAs from the port town must intervene in the matter,” said Goa Against Coal Convenor Custodio Dsouza, while speaking to reporters.
Former secretary of Goa Fishing Boat Owners Association Simon Pereira said that various social groups and activists have been asking MPT to handle clean cargo.
“We have faced enough pollution and we request the MPT to stop bauxite cargo being handled at berth 10. We have always demanded that MPT deals in clean cargo," said Pereira.
The MPT has, however, earlier insisted that since bauxite cargo is heavier than air, the dust would settle and not move in the air to different locations.
