Urban Development Minister Milind Naik on Saturday stated that though administrators have been appointed to municipal councils, all councillors must carry out their work for the betterment of people.
Naik was speaking to reporters after distributing cheques worth a combined Rs 2.5 lakh to needy people from the CM’s Relief Fund.
"We have appointed administrators who will do their job and though the municipal staff and the chief officer will be there, the only change will be that there will be no councillors.”
“Councillors have been elected by people and instead of thinking that the council is dissolved and they will sit at home, they should continue working for the betterment of people.”
“Municipal elections have been delayed because of the Covid pandemic, but as we see now, elections are being conducted in Bihar. Very good arrangements have been taken to conduct elections there and Goa could also see municipal elections soon,” said Naik.
Naik said conducting of municipal elections was dependent on the Covid-19 scenario in Goa.
“Reports say that the second phase of Covid is even worse and we hope that such a wave does not break out in Goa. We hope to have elections soon and a fresh set of councillors taking charge soon," said Naik.
As far as reservations towards wards are concerned, the minister said the directorate of municipal administration is already working in the matter.
“We already have had a meeting with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who will declare the reservations in a few days," said Naik.
Commenting on the distribution of cheques worth a combined Rs 2.5 lakh to needy people from the CM’s Relief Fund, Naik said the government has distributed around 45 cheques last time and six more cheques were distributed on Saturday.
“The financial assistance ranges from Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000, which will be of much importance to people at this time during the pandemic," said Naik.
