MAPUSA: The Department of Botany of St Xavier's College at Mapusa recently organised a two-day seminar on 'Advances in Life Sciences'.
The seminar provided a forum to students, faculty members and researchers to share their experiences with renowned scientists, states a college press note.
The key note address was delivered by Prof R Uma Shaanker of University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru, on ‘Bioprospecting in the Western Ghats, flavour, promises and challenges’. He spoke about the work done and challenges faced at his institute in prospecting the bio-resources of rich Western Ghats. He also spoke about the work being done on discovering drugs from bugs.
The lead lectures was delivered by Prof S R Yadav of Kolhapur University, Retd Prof Irene Furtado of Goa University and Shridar Jawak of NCAOR, Vasco, on ‘Requisites for thoughtful conservation and preservation of plant diversity of western ghats’. Microbiological advances and techniques in Life Sciences and Applications of Remote sensing to life sciences respectively.
A large number of students and research scholars also presented oral and poster presentations on both the days of the seminar.
