After attack on woman, security at Margao’s old station road in focus

MARGAO

Bailancho Ekvott President Auda Viegas has demanded that the police make efforts to stop anti-social activities on the old station road which had witnessed an incident wherein a woman was mercilessly beaten up by three persons on Monday night.

Auda said with the Railway and Excise authorities turning a blind eye, these places are becoming crime sites, robbery, assaults, thefts, sale and use of drugs, open defecation, cooking on footpaths etc.

“The reason for her assault was a dog left by the assaulters while she was carrying food for her child. The assaulters should also be booked for attempt to murder,” Auda demanded in a statement.

She said the shocking news of the woman being mercilessly thrashed should wake up the collective conscience.

“Our team members Christabelle and Dorothy who visited her in hospital observed that the violence used against her has left her with a broken hand, broken fingers and injuries all over her body for which she has to be operated tomorrow. There is no reason to look down upon women in commercial sexual activity as it is existing now as work and they have the same rights enshrined in the Constitution of India as any other citizen under article 14 and 21,” she said.

She added, “The injuries to the victim’s body are a slur on our humanity.”

She said the Excise officers turn a blind eye to the illegal bars that operate here 24x7.

“The municipal authorities and Law keepers should crack down on the illegal activities, anti-social elements who commit offences and live off the earnings of these unfortunate women and also beat them mercilessly,” she added.
