MAPUSA
After tasting success in organizing a plastic free Bodgeshwar zatra in January this year, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has set its eyes on replicating the model at the Milagres feast in
Mapusa.
MMC Chairperson Rohan Kavlekar said the council will discourage use of plastic carry bags among various stalls at the fair and instead provide them with an
alternative.
“We will provide non-plastic ‘GXT Green Ecograde photo degradable bag’ to the stall owners as an alternative to plastic carry bags,” Kavlekar said.
“At first glance the ‘GXT Green Ecograde photo degradable bag’ looks like plastic. But it’s non-toxic and recyclable bags,” he added.
He, however, said the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) was yet to put its seal on the ‘Ecograde photo degradable bag’, but samples of the new material were sent to the department for testing.
The chairperson informed that the civic body will supply stock of new carry bags to all the stall owners lined up for the fair.
“The bags come in three different sizes of big, medium and small and costs around Re 1 per bag,” he said.
It may be recalled in January, the civic body along with the Bodgeshwar temple committee and Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation had managed to curb the use of plastics to a great extent during the temple fair.
