Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha on Saturday slammed those companies with factories in Goa for participating in a recent job fair at Sawantwadi.
Saldanha was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function held to launch work of construction of a shed for the existing stage during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at Housing Board, Upasnagar-Sancoale through DRDA.
“I am shocked that the managements of some reputed industrial units within the State participated in a job fair in Sawantwadi-Maharashtra, depriving unemployed Goan youth of job opportunities in the units located in Goa and thereby, forcing Goan youth to seek employment overseas,” said Saldanha.
“I am also surprised that industrialists complain that most of their vacancies remain unfilled due to differences in expectations from both sides.”
“I would like to ask these industrialists how often have they advertised in Goan dailies for vacancies in their companies? Are interviews conducted in their companies made known to Goan public,” were some questions raised by the Cortalim MLA.
“As per the Industrial Policy, locals should get priority in 80% of employment opportunities, as mentioned by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar in December, 2017. Is this vital clause of the Industrial Policy being followed,” asked Saldanha.
Saldanha reminded the industrialists that resources like land, water and power, necessary to set up these industrial units, have been provided by the State government for industries, despite these resources, particularly land, being scarce.
“What are the benefits accrued to the people of Goa in return for this? These vital questions have to be answered and respect should be shown to the State government, its policies and its people,” Saldanha added.
The Cortalim MLA said the construction of the stage with a shed and a small storage area has been awarded to Bianca Dias at a cost of around Rs 6 lakh and will be completed within 2 months.
“This project will serve people living in the area. I have instructed the contractor do the work with some good aesthetics and the pillars should have some nice design. He will complete the work in the next 2 months, so that the stage with the shed and storage room can be used for the forthcoming Ganesh Chaturthi,” said Saldanha.
