After Europe, Goan dentist secures patent for dental implant in India

Goan dental surgeon, Marvin Cota has obtained a patent in India for his monobloc dental implant invention, more than two years after he had secured it in Europe from the European Patent Office headquartered in Munich, Germany.

The grant of the patent was conveyed to Cota by the Patent Office of the Government of India on December 28 last and is valid until October 2033.

"It is hereby certified that a patent has been granted to the patentee for an invention entitled 'One Piece Custom Made Dental Device for Holding Multiple Teeth' as disclosed in the above-mentioned application for the term of 20 years from the 15th day of October 2013, in accordance with the provisions of the Patent Act, 1970," the Controller of Patent said in the patent certificate issued to Cota.

According to Cota, the use of the device on patients will involve a simple procedure without any surgical flaps. There will also be no stitches, making the procedure almost completely painless, he adds.

An alumnus of the Goa Dental College, Bambolim graduating in the early 1990s and earning a Master's degree, Cota has practised for more than two decades in Vasco and Panaji before

shifting focus to research in design and making dental implants.

Cota said he will now dedicate himself full-time to manufacturing the monobloc implants and engage with fellow dental surgeons across the country to canvas for his patented invention.
