PANAJI
Urging students to buck up and re-orient themselves towards reading, research and innovation, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday said that wasting time after studies should be considered a no-no.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Science Film Festival of India in Panaji, Sawant also said that students today are much luckier than their predecessors because of the emergence of mobile phones and science events.
"When we see all this and do research and start thinking about these things then your time can be spent on innovations, reading, research. Besides your studies, don't waste your time. Start thinking now. This is the right time. You are very lucky people. At your age we didn't have mobiles and didn't also have a science film festival," the Chief Minister said.
"Don't waste time. When the PM is thinking of Navabharat Nirman, it won't happen on its own, and if it is to happen, then youth like you need to step up. You can do 'Make in India', not only 'Make in India', but make it for the world. This country, if it is to be the vishwaguru, then we have to begin now, and if anyone, its strength is you, sitting in front of me," Sawant said, egging on the students, who were present at the inaugural ceremony.
The Chief Minister lamented the fact that top scientific organisations in the State were not on the radar of the student community and urged teachers to guide their wards in the right direction.
"There are so many national institutes in Goa -- polar institute in Vasco, oceanography institute at Dona Paula, water sports institute at Miramar -- there are so many but we have not visited and seen them. (There is also) ICAR at Old Goa," he said.
"Teachers should take the initiative. IIT is there, (at) BITS some so many scientists are being produced in Goa and many more are being readied. But we started collaborating with them only now. Teachers, more importantly, the science teachers, should take the initiative and visit these institutions to create more and more scientists in the State," Sawant said.
