Dayanand Naik (20) of Merces wado in Vaddem succumbed to road accident injuries on Sunday evening while undergoing treatment at GMC hospital. His scooter was knocked down by a speeding truck in Vasco on October 30.
Sources said that the mother is in a state of shock since the incident and has also been hospitalised in a serious condition.
According to information, Naik was going home on his scooter (GA-06-Q-9907) when he was knocked down by a speeding truck (KA-22-C-0381) driven by Jagdish Rathod near the Masjid.
The youth was grievously injured in the incident.
The truck driver dragged the bike to some distance till the RTO office after which angry onlookers managed to stop the vehicle which was moving with the scooter under the vehicle.
Vasco police registered an offence under Section 184 of MV Act and arrested the truck driver on charges of rash and negligent driving.
The youth’s shocking death has yet again brought under the scanner rashly driven vehicles, especially those leaving the MPT.
Residents of Vasco have now demanded that the Mormugao Municipal Council in coordination with authorities concerned keep a tab on such vehicles.
“This incident is a grim reminder that all enforcement agencies and elected representatives have been soft on transport operators, else such rash driving would have never taken place with such impunity,” said activist Adv Savio Correia.
“The MMC had passed a so-called unanimous resolution in January 2016 to stop coal and bauxite transportation through the town. Our city fathers owe us an explanation as to what has happened since then.”
“The RTO and Traffic Police challan the common man for minor traffic violations, but those polluting the environment and endangering public health are allowed to go scot-free for obvious reasons.”
“The primary responsibility is to ensure that all trucks leaving the port are not overloaded and properly covered and are driven carefully through the city. The MPT has a big role to play to ensure all these norms are followed,” Correia added.
