Upendra Naik reads out the written government order cancelling the Mirabag Bandhara, in the presence of fellow protesters.
Agitators opposed to the proposed Bandhara at Mirabag-Sanvordem were on Thursday finally handed a written order from the government stating that the Bandhara has been cancelled.
After 49 days of continuous sit-in protest against the proposed Mirabag Bandhara, villagers withdrew their agitation last week following an assurance from Chief Minister Pramod Sawant during a meeting in Margao that the proposed Bhandara would be cancelled.
The chief minister had promised that a written order cancelling the project would be issued within two days, prompting the protesters to call off their agitation in good faith.
In the meantime, residents continued to gather at the protest site daily, awaiting official confirmation.
Their wait ended on Thursday, as the agitators were finally handed a written order from the government stating that the Mirabag Bandhara has been cancelled, a development confirmed by Upendra Naik.
Speaking on the occasion, Naik expressed heartfelt gratitude to all those who extended support to the agitation, including various political parties, social organisations, clubs, activists, the media, the business community from Curchorem, and citizens from Sanguem, Savordem and Curchorem.
He made special mention of the significant participation of women in the movement.
On behalf of the villagers, he also thanked Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for addressing their concerns and resolving the issue.
