The Akhil Goa Kshatriya Pagi Samaj (AGKPS), a Canacona-based traditional fishermen’s organisation, has demanded that the fisheries department completely ban the use of generators and DG sets in all fishing trawlers.

AGKPS President Divakar Pagi stated that the ban on generators and DG sets in trawlers should be imposed to effectively implement the ban and dissuade the use of LED fishing practices.

“As it is very clear that 60 to 150kva capacity DG sets are required to power the use of LED lights which was banned in 2016, the use of DG sets is required only to power LED bulbs of mostly 1600 watts up to 5000 watts which around 15 to 25 bulbs are used by fishing boat owners to attract fish and due to intense heat generated by the lights, juvenile fish along with all corals and marine vegetation gets destroyed,” informed Pagi, in a press note.

Pagi further stated that the Goa Shipyard Limited at Vasco has submitted a report dated January 24, 2024 which has inspected 16 random fishing boats across Goa, in which they stated that the need for a DG set arises only to power duty galley equipment such as refrigerators, air-conditioners, hot plates, ovens, washing machines, etc., which none of the boats across Goa uses.
