Rejecting the government’s proposed square-metre slab, the Agonda Gram Sabha on Sunday resolved to implement a 10% increase in the existing house-tax pattern for houses in the village. Additionally, they dismissed the government’s proposal to levy garbage tax on residential properties.
During the Gram Sabha, which saw significant attendance, concerns were raised about the imposition of unnecessary taxes on the people. Members argued that the taxes, including garbage fees collected from tourism businesses, were sufficient to generate funds for the panchayat.
Panchayat Secretary Amol Naikgaunkar explained that the government had mandated a maximum levy of Rs. 40 per sqm for residential units and the introduction of a garbage collection tax.
However, members opted to revisit the current house tax structure and proposed a maximum 10% increase based on the old slab. They rejected the garbage collection tax proposal outright. Despite explanations from the panchayat about the current taxes, which range from minimal amounts, members suggested rounding up the figures to the nearest rupee.
The resolutions, unanimously passed, also mandate the collection of House-Tax Assessment Forms from villagers for tax revision. Despite concerns raised by the panchayat about revenue collection and village development, the resolutions stood.
Recent development works worth Rs 45 lakhs were completed, funded by the panchayat. They annually collect over Rs 25 lakhs from tourism-related activities. Additionally, approved projects include a water tank and crematorium. Discussions also included road resurfacing plans.
