With the famous Lairai Devi Zatra set to begin at Shirgao in a few days, devotees (Dhondgans) from Sonal-Sattari have submitted a memorandum to Valpoi police requesting increased police patrolling along the riverbanks.
They have specifically demanded strict monitoring at the well-known spot ‘Mhovacho Guno’ in Sonal, including restrictions on entry for tourists engaging in nuisance or hooliganism.
The devotees emphasised that no untoward incident should disrupt the sacred observance.
Due to rising temperatures in recent weeks, many people from various regions have been flocking to rivers in Sattari for bathing and picnics.
However, incidents of alcohol consumption, disorderly conduct, and fights have become increasingly common, leading to repeated drowning cases and tarnishing the image of the region’s rivers.
Devotees will be residing near riverbanks for several days starting Thursday and they fear that the presence of unruly tourists may create serious disturbances and even lead to conflicts.
The memorandum highlights concerns over potential fights and law and order issues at these river sites, urging the police to intensify patrolling and ensure safety.
Devotees have warned that such disturbances could disrupt the religious rituals and have appealed to authorities to take the matter seriously.
It is also noted that similar religious observances are beginning across villages in Sattari, where devotees often stay either in temple premises or near rivers. In such circumstances, locals insisted that preventing nuisance activities is crucial, and increased police vigilance is essential.
