With road accidents and fatalities continuing to rise across Goa, the Traffic Police have drawn up a multi-pronged strategy that includes installing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras in accident-prone areas, deploying special motorcycle patrols, and intensifying road safety awareness campaigns.
Superintendent of Traffic Police Prabodh Shirvaikar said the measures form part of a broader effort to strengthen road safety through enforcement, engineering and education.
Traffic monitoring through Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled cameras will begin from July 1, with 92 locations across the State already identified for installation. The first phase would cover 26 locations.
In addition to these AI cameras, the Traffic Police have proposed setting up ANPR cameras at accident-prone stretches and high-traffic zones to improve surveillance and enforcement.
“The traffic violation challans will be generated based on footage captured by the AI and ANPR camera network. An awareness campaign is currently underway to educate motorists about the new system before enforcement begins,” he said.
The Traffic Police also plan to increase their presence on the roads by deploying special motorcycle patrol squads to monitor traffic movement and detect violations. Additional personnel will be stationed at congestion-prone locations to ease traffic flow and improve compliance with road safety rules.
