Barely a month after a report in The Goan highlighted the unfenced area of the Dabolim International Airport being used by locals and taxi operators as a shortcut to gain access to the airport, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has sprung into action and covered the area with sheets to avoid the area being used as shortcut access.

The Goan on August 11 had reported how several people and taxi operators had found a novel method to avoid paying entry fees or traffic jams at Dabolim International Airport. The Goan had highlighted that many taxi operators using the highway parallel to the airport as a parking ground would be gaining access to and from the airport through a shortcut and after managing to find customers, take the passenger along with their baggage out of the airport through the same shortcut leading to the highway, where their taxis are parked causing several accidents while passengers tried to cross the highway along with their baggage. Aware of the situation, airport authorities had begun erecting a fence around the airport.

When contacted, Airport Director BCH Negi had informed that airport authorities had already begun the work to fence the airport. “We have taken up the work and it is 75% complete. We will fence the entire airport premises within the next two months,” Negi had said.

However as a relief to several people who had complained about several accidents, the AAI has temporarily shut the access in the unfenced area with sheets.
