Aldona locals resolve to ban movement of heavy vehicles

The locals also gave a green signal to the panchayat to assess house tax.

Several villagers raised concern over the heavy vehicles that pass through the village, especially during the night time. They demanded banning the movement of such heavy interstate vehicles through the village roads.

Aldona Sarpanch Ashwin de Souza informed that the panchayat has decided to install CCTV cameras at different locations and the same can be used to monitor the movement of vehicles.

The gram sabha then passed a resolution not to allow the movement of heavy interstate vehicles in the village.

The sarpanch informed the villagers that the assessment of taxes was not carried out in the village since 2009. He also stressed the need to assess to generate revenue for the panchayat.

“Tax assessment has not been done for more than a decade. The audit reports have brought this to our notice as the panchayat was losing an opportunity to generate revenue. We are moving a proposal to assess taxes which is placed before the gram sabha for approval,” De Souza said.

A local informed that there were cases where illegal houses constructed on comunidade land were given permanent house numbers by the panchayat.

“Write to us giving specific details of such house numbers and we assure to take action in the matter,” the sarpanch said.

Another resident of Aldona, Oldrin Pereira said that the panchayat has given his house number to a third party. He further said at least 60 house numbers have been given illegally which was brought to the notice of the panchayat. He said the court had also directed to file an FIR in the matter.

The sarpanch informed that the panchayat has sought legal opinion in the matter and in the meantime, the panchayat will keep on hold the process of assessments for disputed house numbers.

The villagers also raised the issue of an increase in anti-social activities and the problem of irregular power supply in the village.
