All eyes are on Cuncolim as Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is set to lay the foundation stone for a 15-bedded Urban Primary Health Centre on Friday.
The Chief Minister’s visit has drawn heightened attention following a fervent appeal by prominent citizens, including former bureaucrat Elvis Gomes, environmental activist Dr Jorson Fernandes, and retired Superintendent of Police Sammy Tavares. The trio has urged the CM to take a decisive stand on the controversial Section 39A of the TCP Act during his visit to Cuncolim ” the home village of former Allahabad High Court Chief Justice Ferdino Rebello, who has launched the Enough is Enough Movement in the state to protect Goa’s land resources from destruction.
Tavares had also called on Cuncolim MLA and Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao to raise the issue with both the Chief Minister and TCP Minister Vishwajit Rane, urging them to scrap the contentious provision ahead of the visit. While no concrete plan of action has been outlined if their demand is not met, Cuncolim police are understood to have reviewed security arrangements in light of the developments.
Apart from the health centre, the Chief Minister will also lay foundation stones for several key projects, including the renovation of the Chieftain’s Memorial Park, construction of Panchayat Ghars in Guirdolim and Paroda, and underground cabling works in Chandor and Guirdolim.
Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao said the Urban Primary Health Centre is a “dream project” and a long-standing promise to the people. “With the support of the people, this project is becoming a reality. Many facilities will be available at this centre,” he said.
He added that the renovation of the Chieftain’s Memorial Park has been prioritised to preserve local history. “The story of the Cuncolim revolt must be passed on to the next generation. I had demanded its inclusion in the school syllabus, which was fulfilled. This monument will honour those who sacrificed their lives for Goa’s liberation,” he said.
The MLA further noted that the new Panchayat Ghars will enhance civic services for villagers, while underground cabling will help ensure uninterrupted power supply.
