The highest single-day figure of 54 new cases and one death in Canacona took the total active Covid cases to a record 292 in the taluka on Saturday.
According to reports, a 52-year-old man from a micro-containment zone in Palolem died from Covid related causes.
The deceased was among five members of a family to have tested positive, prompting the South Goa collector to declare the area as a micro-containment zone on Friday. He is the 15th person to succumb to the virus in Canacona taluka.
Health sources said 95 antigen tests were conducted by the Canacona CHC and 54 tested positive. The new cases in Canacona taluka were detected mostly in Canacona municipality as well as some cases in Loliem-Polem, Poinguinim and Shristhal, Agonda and Khola.
While there are 292 active cases, the total number of Covid infections has risen to 1,203 since the pandemic began in Canacona.
Describing the situation as alarming, health authorities appealed to people to take all possible precautions to avoid getting infected.
“Fifty-four new cases were detected by the Canacona CHC on one day alone. The situation is going out of hand. Please do not move out of homes unless there is a pressing need,” said an official.
Meanwhile, Dy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes has once again appealed to people to wear masks and to maintain social distancing.
“Please do not hold functions and if there are functions, please avoid social gatherings. Please take all measures to avoid contracting the disease and to stop the virus from spreading to other people.
