The communally sensitive Rumdamol Housing Board witnessed some anxious moments on Sunday morning when local residents nabbed a burqua-clad man from Curhcorem moving around in the locality.
Villagers questioned the man for wearing costume of a Muslim woman, before handing him over to the Maina-Curtorim police for further inquiry. They have demanded a thorough inquiry into the episode as the incident has come on the eve of the ensuing Ganesh festivities.
A local resident Asphak Syed, a member of a human rights cell, told The Goan at the Maina-Curtorim police station that the cops should conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident. “We have been told that the person nabbed by the residents has a history of mental illness. But we want an inquiry whether the man was drafted by someone under the guise of a Muslim woman to foment trouble in the Housing Board,” Syed said.
He complimented the people of the Housing Board for not taking law in their hands and handing the person to the police for further investigation. “In these times of mob lynching and mobocracy, the residents of Housing Board believed in the rule of law and handed the man to the police,” Syed said.
District police chief, SP Arvind Gawas, told The Goan that the man in question had been undergoing treatment for mental problem.
“We have verified the details. DySP Raju Raut Desai is personally monitoring the case. Relatives of the man produced medical papers of the man, suggesting that he was being treated,” the SP said.
