Arlekar and Benjamin bat for Konkani

Panchayat Minister and senior BJP leader Rajendra Arlekar and Velim Independent MLA Benjamin D’Silva on Monday batted for Konkani as the official language, saying the BJP-ruled government has not supported the resolution passed in the Goa Legislative Assembly demanding equal status for Marathi.

Speaking at Velim on the occasion of the inauguration of the extension of the village panchayat ghar, Arlekar said the BJP cannot be indifferent to Konkani when he was instrumental in introducing use of the language in the Assembly proceedings during his stint as Speaker of the House. “The BJP has not supported the resolution in support of Marathi. We have made our stand clear as far as the language and culture of the state are concerned and we will continue to work in that direction,” Arlekar said.
He said that his stand on the issue is the same as that of the government.
In his brief address, Velim MLA Benjamin D’Silva told the people that the resolution passed in the House is not a Bill, asserting that only Konkani will be the official language of Goa.
