Asked police to plan CCTVs at strategic points in Vasco: MLA

Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Monday said he has spoken to the police department for a plan so that CCTV cameras can be set up at strategic points in the port town. He has assured to follow up on the matter with the

government.

“CCTVs need to be installed especially with so many vital installations in the port town. We also have a railway station inside the city which brings in a large number of people and there are chances that people can also escape from here after committing a crime,”

said Salkar.

“I have already spoken to the police to identify strategic points and prepare a plan along with estimates along with the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC).”

“We also need information about where the monitor for these CCTVs can be placed and who will be tracking the footage and we will have such a system where we will also have the CCTV installed along with a five-year maintenance contract either through the MP, the government or even through CSR from business houses,” said Salkar.

When contacted, Vasco PI Kapil Nayak said the police station had earlier written to the municipal council about the installation of CCTV cameras, but the proposal was turned down due to lack of funds.

“CCTVs are an important tool for police, especially with rising crimes. We need to have CCTVs at strategic points and we wrote to the MMC after identifying around 100 strategic points, but they replied to us that there was a lack of funds,” he added.
