The number of cases involving sons beating their mothers has been on the rise, according to women’s rights group Bailancho Saad, in addition to the already existing number of cases involving sexual assault, exploitation and domestic violence.
Celebrating International Women’s Day on Tuesday, the organization presented a report of its cases recorded for the months of October, November and December 2015.
Speaking to the audience, mainly comprising of women, organization head Sabina Martins reiterated the demands it would be placing before the government.
“In the past three months, we have received over 60 cases of women, and most are of their sons beating them. While we have been pursuing authorities for effective action, the process is very slow. The police staff, to handle cases of women, is yet to be recruited. One-stop crisis centre of the government is not in sight yet,” she said.
She also added that with no evidence gathering unit such as forensic laboratory, cases of sexual assault take a long time to be resolved and have also demanded for a full-fledged department with necessary budgetary allocation.
Justice P K Misra, chairperson of Goa Human Rights Commission also speaking at the event, said that while women were the oppressed community, it was the society’s attitude that needs a change.
Other demands made by the organization includes appointment of a full-time director for women and child development, protection officers and infrastructure and personnel for the unit. They have also asked for speedy disposal of cases against women and ensuring implementation of orders by the authorities.
“Budgetary allocations should also be made for families affected by alcoholism, gambling, drug addiction and other vices for relief from emotional, physical and financial stress,” said Martins.
