Assembly, govt will decide on Sequeira statue, says MGP

Dhavalikar asserts party will also consult MLAs, BJP & Goa Forward

PANAJI
Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party on Saturday said that it will consult with the State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as well as Goa Forward Party (GFP) over installation of the statue of the Father of Opinion Poll Dr Jack de Sequeira's statue at the State Legislative Assembly Complex, Porvorim.
Goa Forward on Friday had demanded that Dr Sequeira's statue be installed at Goa Legislative Assembly Complex aiming at giving recognition to his achievement.
Speaking to The Goan Everyday, MGP President Deepak Dhavalikar said, "These issues do not go forward until and unless Assembly and the Government resolve to do it. I am of the opinion that let them both decide."
"The statue of Bhausaheb Bandodkar was installed at the Assembly Complex after resolving in the State Legislative Assembly. If the government wants, it is possible for them to do anything", he pointed out. "But whatever decision has to be taken by MGP as a Party, I will speak to all three of our MLAs and decide. We will also consult with BJP and Goa Forward over the issue", he stated.
MGP then in 1967 wanted to merge the state of Goa into Maharashtra, but Goans voted against the merger to their disbelief.
PWD Minister and Senior MGP Leader Sudin Dhavalikar too said that he will comment on GFP's demand after consulting with the Party's central committee.
"This issue of installing Dr Jack Seqeira's statue at Assembly Complex had come up for discussion during the tenure of the last government also. But I am not aware what happened then", he informed.
"The matter has to be discussed by the central committee of the Party and only then I will be able to comment", he said.
