In yet another attempt at equipping state's specialized counter-terrorism agency, Goa Police department has floated tenders inviting bids for the supply of bulletproof sentry posts and bulletproof shields for the Anti-Terrorism Squad.
The tender issued by Director General of Goa Police has invited bids from approved manufacturers and authorized dealers and distributors for the supply of 10 bulletproof sentry posts and 30 bulletproof shields.
A per the technical specifications listed in the tender document, the design of the camouflaged bulletproof sentry post should allow easy assembly and dismantling within 10 minutes. It should be movable with a provision to attach and detach wheels and should weigh around 300 kgs. The body of the sentry post is required to be manufactured using bulletproof steel duly tested in ballistic testing laboratories and forensic science laboratories in Gujarat and Chandigarh. The test reports have to be submitted along with the bid.
Similarly, the bulletproof shields should be portable in VIP vehicles and should afford quick protection to ATS personnel during rescue missions and a full-body cover during special operations. The small bulletproof glass slot has to be provided on the front of the shield to afford the personnel clear view while advancing. It has also been specified that the body of the shields should be molded out of advanced composite material, which is light as well as strong.
Upon acquisition after completion of the tendering process, these sentry posts and shields will provide protection to ATS officers against ammunition fired from Self Loading Rifles and AK (Kalashnikov) series, from a range as close as 10 mts. The process for upgradation and modernization of the state's ATS has been underway since December 2015, when a tender was floated inviting bids for the supply of 1,000 full-body protectors, polycarbonate shields, helmets and polycarbonate lathis. The bid, however, lapsed owing to various reasons and delay caused due to the code of conduct enforced in the run-up to the state Assembly elections.
The tender for this much-required equipment along with bulletproof vehicles and metal detector frames is expected to be floated shortly after the acquisition of the sentry posts and shields.
