As the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) ordered the suspension or closure of two units operating at the Nessai Industrial Estate in Sao Jose de Areal village, Salcete Mamlatdar Vimod Dalal, along with the police, descended at the industrial estate on Tuesday to execute the orders.
As a precautionary measure, however, the Salcete Mamlatdar has told the occupants to immediately clear the waste stacked inside the units or threatened to get the waste removed by the authorities.
The GSPCB has ordered the suspension or closure of the two industrial units at Nessai under the provisions of the Water and Air Act.
In the first case, GSPCB Member Secretary Dr Shamila Monteiro had called for the suspension or closure of operations of a unit on the ground that the unit was operating without the mandatory consent to operate.
In the second case, the GSPCB Member Secretary ordered the closure of a waste collecting unit on the plea that the waste collector was not registered with the Board.
Salcete Mamlatdar Vimod Dalal told the media that he has ordered the occupants of the two units to clear the goods stacked inside the units as a precautionary measure. “There can be a disaster inside the unit if by chance the goods are engulfed by fire. Hence, I have ordered the occupants to clear the waste failing which the authorities will move in,” he warned.
Social activist from Sao Jose de Areal, Freddy Travasso hoped that the GSPCB will take the action initiated against the two units to its logical conclusion.
