With the monsoons finally in full fury and the approach roads to the Sonsodo waste treatment plant in a bad condition, the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has told the Margao Municipal Council in clear terms not to indulge in open dumping of waste at Sonsodo.
In fact, the GWMC has further told the civic body to ensure that the day-to-day waste unloaded at the Sonsodo plant is treated inside the shed by carrying out bare minimum maintenance of the waste treatment machinery.
That’s not all. The Corporation has further advised the Margao Municipality to empty the leachate collection tank installed at the Sonsodo plant periodically to avoid overflowing.
The GWMC’s communique to the civic body assumes significance given that the approach road to the Sonsodo road is in a pathetic state. In fact, just a week ago, garbage collection and disposal had come to a halt as the garbage-laden trucks could not unload tonnes of the daily waste at the plant. With the piled up waste dumped around the Sonsodo shed now cleared and carted away to the legacy dump and is being covered, the Corporation does not want any more garbage to be dumped around the shed, especially around the approach roads to the plant, in the event of the road leading to the plant turns unmotorable.
In the communique, GWMC Managing Director, Levinson Martins recalled the joint meeting that took place at Sonsodo on April 26 last during the visit of Waste Management Minister Atanasio Monserrate, wherein it was decided to remediate the waste dumped by MMC in the waste processing shed, also on the sides of the shed and towards back entry of the shed for last more than one year, which was estimated to be around 14,380 cu.m.
“As the shed was full with heaps of untreated waste, the side wall of the shed collapsed. Around 7,000 cubic metres of the waste i.e. from the sides and back of the shed and also from within the shed was transported at the clear remediated area that was available on dump for the purpose of remediation,” Martins pointed out, while urging the civic body not to indulge in any open dumping at the site.
Meanwhile, GWMC Managing Director, Levinson Martins has told the MMC that before commencement of monsoon, the GWMC contractor managed to approximately remediate 1500 cu.m. and the rest of the waste is being covered due to monsoon and will be taken up for remediation after the monsoon.
While saying that the GWMC, on behalf of MMC has proposed to float two tenders, i.e. for refurbishment of shed along with road around the shed and the other tender for operation and maintenance of day-to-day waste, Martins has reminded the Chief Officer that administrative and financial approval need to be obtained by MMC to facilitate the GWMC to take up the work of handling of the day-to-day waste as a depository work.
In bid to clear piled up waste, Corp shifts remediation ops inside shed
MARGAO: In a bid to clear the piled up waste inside the Sonsodo Waste treatment plant shed, the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has shifted the remediation operation inside the Sonsodo shed to clear the accumulated waste and to make room for daily dumping of wet waste generated in the city.
In fact, the remediation machinery has started the work of remediating the piled up waste inside the plant, believed to be approximately around 14,380 cubic metres. While the GWMC contractor has stopped remediation of the Sonsodo legacy dump and has covered the dump with tarpaulin sheets in view of the rains, the Corporation has got the contractor to shift the machinery inside the shed to remediate the piled up waste and avert a crisis.
Sources pointed out that of the total 14,380 cubic metre of piled up waste inside the shed, the GWMC-appointed contractor has so far remediated around 1500-odd cubic metres of waste. “Shifting of the remediation machinery inside the plant will help clear the piled up waste and make room for the daily fresh waste,” sources said.
