It may have the requisite equipment and facilities, but the lone 108 ambulance for the entire Canacona taluka is in dire need of one key component “ new tyres “ to ensure a safe and secure journey.
At present, all four tyres of the ambulance (GA-07-G-1452) are completely bald, jeopardising the safety of patients and occupants in the vehicle, especially when the ambulance has to move at high speeds to rush a patient to the hospital.
Onlookers who noticed the condition of the tyres were left to wonder how and why health authorities permitted the ambulance to operate on bald tyres.
“Travelling in this ambulance is itself a life-threatening experience. Since the tyres have no tread and grip, they can easily burst and get punctured or the ambulance can skid and lose control on a slippery surface, leading to an accident,” remarked a person who observed the conditions of all four tyres.
When questioned, a source familiar with the 108 ambulance services informed reporters that they are aware of the condition of the tyres.
“We have already informed authorities concerned, but we are helpless as a change of tyres is not permitted before the vehicle runs 50,000 kilometres,” said the source.
People have, however, raised questions on the rules to replace bald tyres and sought to know how authorities can permit an ambulance to run on bald tyres.
People have appealed to the government and Health Minister Vishwajit Rane to ensure that the tyres on the lone ambulance in Canacona are immediately replaced to avoid any road mishap.
