The Margao Municipal Council has finally resolved the electricity issues at Sonsodo, facilitating the resumption of baling operations at the site.
Baling of the dry waste, however, is yet to fall in place, with the two machines for the purpose unable to treat the daily dry waste generated in the city, leave along handling the tons of accumulated dry waste at Sonsodo.
That’s not all. The mound of dry waste at Sonsodo threatens to slide down on the main road leading to the waste treatment plant for want of treatment and the intervening rains.
Consider this. The MMC collects around 10-12 tonnes of dry waste from the city every day, before the same is transported to Sonsodo. The two baling machines can treat around 5-6 tonnes of dry waste, indicating that around five tonnes of daily dry waste remain untreated at Sonsodo.
What is worrying the waste managers at Sonsodo is that the civic body will neither be able to process all the dry waste coming to the site nor handle the mound of dry waste, throwing the entire exercise haywire.
MMC Officials in private said the civic body is putting a plan to tide over the situation. An official informed that plans are afoot to install another two baling machines at Sonsodo to handle the increasing amount of dry waste transported at the site.
Officials, however, said the civic body should ensure that the sheds to house the two baling machines are erected for early installation of the machines. “We have to install the additional two baling machines on topmost priority to handle the dry waste problem. Otherwise, things may reach unmanageable proportions in the coming days”, warned an official.
As part of decentralization, the MMC had set up baling machines behind the municipal market at the old fish market and on the SGPDA ground. However, since operations at these two sites have been discontinued, all the city dry waste is now transported to Sonsodo as a result of which the system of handling dry waste has gone out of track.
