Chairman of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa, Adv. Sangram Desai on Saturday said the Bar Council by a majority has adopted a resolution seeking reservation of two seats for lawyers from Goa on the Council.
He, however, hastened to add that the Advocates Act, 1961 will have to be amended to give effect to the resolution adopted by the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa.
“The Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa have adopted the resolution demanding reservation of two seats for Lawyers from Goa on the Council. We have passed the resolution in full majority and we will do the follow up with the Bar Council of India to give reservation of two seats. Very soon, we will be able to secure two seats for the lawyers from Goa on the Council”, he added.
President of the South Goa Advocates Association Adv Prasad Naik told the media that the Association had taken up with the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa to reserve two seats for Goan lawyers on the Council since there is no representation for Goa on the panel.
“In the absence of representation for Goa on the Bar Council, we have been facing issues of coordination. In fact, since Goa is a separate state, we are entitled to have a separate Bar Council for Goa and separate High Court for Goa”, Adv Prasad added.
