There are a number of places in Goa, where within a few metres from outer edge of highways, we either have a river, a hill, a valley or a minor water body.
The complexity will arise in case there is a liquor shop or a bar after a river or a valley, which may or may not be within 500 meters from the outer edge of the highway. How will the excise department measure 500 meters in such cases?
Menino D’Souza, excise commissioner, said, “We will use geo-positioning-system (GPS) to ensure 100 percent accuracy in implementing the SC’s order.”
He continued, “To measure the distance between two points, GPS uses longitude and latitude of both the points. The distance thus arrived at is absolutely accurate.”
As of now, the land survey department is using a technology to ascertain distance from highways. But, GPS is to make sure that no alcohol business gets shut even due to a very tiny error.
