Expressing shock and surprise over the recent no-confidence motion against him, Nikhilchandra Khalap, Chairman of the Bardez Bazaar Consumer Cooperative Society, stated that some members were dissatisfied with his efforts on the society’s mall project.
He also revealed that there were attempts to sell the society’s land to builders, a move he strongly opposed.
Khalap confirmed that he had received a notice informing him of a special meeting to be held by the Registrar on Monday (December 9).
However, he pointed out that the notice lacked key details, including the names and signatures of the directors who proposed the no-confidence motion, as well as any reasons for their decision.
“I am perplexed by the sudden move, especially considering that only seven months remain in my term,” Khalap said.
“I never sought the chairmanship, but was unanimously offered the position by all the directors to stabilize the institution, end the ‘musical chair’ situation and restore trust among the directors and shareholders,” he added.
The chairman emphasized his efforts to advance the society’s objectives, particularly highlighting his work on the society’s mall project.
He also reiterated his firm stance against any joint ventures or selling the society’s land to builders, a proposal which he claims some directors support. Khalap’s opposition to such moves has sparked a strong reaction from shareholders, who have already voiced their disapproval of the no-confidence motion.
“I fully endorse the shareholders’ view and support the formation of a committee to oversee the daily operations of the society and investigate past irregularities,” Khalap added.
“Throughout my tenure, I have operated with integrity and remained devoted to the principles of the cooperative.”
The situation continues to unfold, with Monday’s meeting set to play a pivotal role in determining the future of the Bardez Bazaar Consumer Cooperative Society’s leadership.
