Expressing doubts over the capabilities of the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho on Friday evening said the beautified Vaddem Lake could be neglected if handed over to the municipal council.

Godinho even suggested that the Confraria or a public committee be appointed to maintain the beautified

Vaddem Lake.

Godinho was addressing a large gathering at the beautified Vaddem Lake, where a special prayer service was performed near the statue of St Andrew installed in the middle of the Lake to mark the feast of St Andrew.

“The condition of MMC garden is really bad despite being in the city and we at Vaddem have beautified a lake. The MMC can’t manage its own gardens and is now planning to take charge of this beautified Vaddem lake.”

“I want this lake to be in the hands of our Confraria or a committee, to ensure that this beautiful property is maintained. If this beautified Vaddem lake is entrusted to the MMC, there may not be proper care,” said Godinho.

The minister, however, said he would resolve the issue of maintenance at a joint

meeting.

“We will resolve these issues at a joint meeting, but till that time I will wait to keep it open to public. After a review meeting on December 4, I will throw open this beautified Vaddem lake to the

public,”said Godinho.

He claimed that the Vaddem lake has been a perfect site for communal harmony.

“During Ganesh festival, the Visarjan is conducted at this lake. This is the best example of communal unity and communities living in harmony. We have to salute Goans because no one can divide us on grounds of

religion,” said Godinho.
