Blaming the government and concerned departments for the worsening condition of the River Sal and coastal creeks, Aam Aadmi Party Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas has offered to take charge of their restoration, promising visible results.

“I challenge the government to appoint me as Chairman to oversee the restoration of the River Sal and the 23 creeks along the coastline. With the support of local panchayats, I will find a solution,” Viegas told the media.

Responding to concerns over repeated contamination in the Colva creek and River Sal, Viegas said the river passes through seven Assembly constituencies before meeting the Arabian Sea at Betul. “Of these, the BJP represents Nuvem, Margao and Navelim. Why have these ruling MLAs not taken steps to protect the river? If they cannot act, the government should give me the responsibility, and I will deliver results before the next Assembly elections,” he said.

Speaking about the Colva creek, Viegas said that while the Water Resources Department carries out annual cleaning, the main issue is ensuring nearby establishments are connected to the underground sewerage system.

“After a toilet-cum-changing room was found releasing sewage in the open, we ensured it was connected to the Colva STP. Restaurants have also applied for connections, but delays are being caused due to the lack of a single-window clearance system,” he added.

Viegas also responded to earlier allegations by some activists accusing him of having vested interests in the Colva creek work, saying no evidence had been provided to support the claims.

Reiterating his commitment, the Benaulim MLA said he is confident of restoring the Colva creek and improving the overall condition of the River Sal if given the opportunity.
