Authorities urged to curb discharge
MARGAO
Cavelossim Sarpanch Dixon Vaz has approached the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), urging it to stop the unchecked discharge of raw sewage from Margao into the River Sal.
In a memorandum submitted to the GSPCB Chairman and Member Secretary on Monday, the Cavelossim panchayat highlighted the rising pollution levels in the River Sal as it flows through villages in Salcete. The memorandum noted that the river’s condition has worsened over the past few years due to waste dumping, sewage discharge and other harmful pollutants.
The Sarpanch said the pollution is harming the natural ecosystem and posing serious health risks to residents who rely on the river for daily use. “The foul smell, discoloured water and decline in aquatic life clearly show the situation is getting worse. Raw sewage is also being discharged at some locations, which needs immediate action as per law,” he said.
He has urged authorities to act quickly to control and prevent further pollution. “Steps such as proper waste management, strict monitoring of industrial discharge and sewage, and public awareness campaigns must be taken at the earliest,” he added.
Speaking to the media, Vaz said raw sewage and wastewater from Margao are entering the River Sal at several points, including near the South Goa District Hospital, the SGPDA market and the Khareband area. “Unless the flow of sewage is stopped, the situation will not improve,” he said.
