Tourist taxi operators from Benaulim voiced their grievances on Friday, citing harassment by the Transport Department regarding speed governors. They claimed that the department penalised them for not replacing or upgrading their speed governors.
During a meeting with Goa Forward Party Chief Vijai Sardesai, the taxi operators expressed their ongoing struggles with the Transport Department’s demands.
They highlighted the financial strain of replacing and upgrading speed governors, as well as challenges such as fines imposed on their passengers for roadside urination due to inadequate public toilets.
Responding to these concerns, Sardesai pledged his support to the association. He assured them of initiating discussions with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to address their issues and seek a resolution.
Sardesai promptly contacted the Chief Minister to arrange a meeting with a delegation of tourist taxi operators.
In efforts to enhance road safety, Sardesai advocated for the installation of AI-based speed cameras statewide, similar to those in Panaji, arguing for their effectiveness over traditional speed governors.
Additionally, recognising the urgent need for basic facilities, Sardesai urged the government to install public toilets along highways to improve the travel experience and alleviate challenges faced by taxi operators.
Sardesai strongly condemned any efforts to displace Goans from their employment within the tourism industry.
The taxi operators expressed optimism for positive regulatory changes and infrastructure improvements. They expect the government to enhance the tourism experience while safeguarding the interests of local taxi operators.
