On the eve of the roll-out of the trafficsignals in Salcete, a delegation from Betalbatim called on the Road Transportofficials on Tuesday and demanded that the traffic signals installed at thevillage junction not be operated.
Betalbatim has become the second village afterBenaulim to oppose the traffic signals installed on the village's narrow roads.
The delegation, led by Betalbatim SarpanchAnthony Fernandes, impressed upon the RTO officials that the traffic signalsinstalled at the narrow junction would only aggravate the traffic problemsplaguing the village. The Sarpanch, however, said that they had no issue withthe CCTV cameras installed at the signals from the security point of view.
“We impressed upon the RTO officials that thetraffic signals will not work at Betalbatim without dividers and a roundabout. The officials were kind enough to hear our plea and agreed to do the needful. The decision will give relief to churchgoers and others,” he said.
To a question, the Sarpanch pointed out thatthe Panchayat would move the PWD with a proposal to explore the possibility ofbuilding a roundabout at the junction for the smooth movement of traffic. “Oncethe roundabout takes shape, the authorities can then see the feasibility ofmaking the traffic signals functional,” he added.
