Bhoma locals, led by the Revolutionary Goans, met the ST Commissioner on Friday to report harassment by the government regarding the road widening issue. A petition was later submitted to Commissioner Deepak Karmalkar, demanding an investigation into the issue and justice for the tribals.
Karmalkar, giving a patient hearing to the tribals, inquired about the nature of the harassment they were facing. The tribals explained that NHAI authorities, the local MLA, and the PWD minister did not address their concerns regarding the impact of road widening on their temples, houses, and culture.
The tribals also reported that the police used force on Thursday to detain them while they were opposing the survey of trees. The youth mentioned that the police attempted to suppress their voices with threats of not receiving police clearance certificates for jobs if arrested.
One tribal informed the Commissioner that the matter is in the High Court, and authorities are conducting surveys without a decision being reached.
Karmalkar assured to review the petition and decide on the future course of action accordingly. RGP President Manoj Parab informed reporters that the Commissioner has committed to visiting Bhoma village to better understand the issue.
“We impressed upon the Commissioner that unless they personally visit the village and speak to the tribals, the reality would not be understood, and he has assured that he would pay a visit along with a delegation,” added Parab.
Elderly tribal women highlighted police harassment during detention, expressing physical pain and stress. RGP leaders Premanand Gaude, Ajay Kholkar, Vishvesh Naik, and others were present.
