Oppn protests at Azad Maidan over MPs’ suspension

PANAJI

The political parties in the Opposition in Goa on Friday held a protest at the iconic Azad Maidan in the capital over the mass suspension of 146 members of Parliament (MPs) in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

Opposition members under the banner of I.N.D.I.A. block held demonstrations at Azad Maidan against the suspension of 146 MPs.

The MPs were suspended when they raised the issue of the unprecedented breach of security in Parliament recently.

Congress and AAP which are both part of the national Opposition alliance I.N.D.I.A led the protest in which some other political parties from the bloc -- NCP and TMC -- also participated in it.

Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao took aim at BJP workers who burnt an effigy of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the controversial episode of mimicry of Vice President Jagddeep Dhankar.

“BJP workers may have burnt the effigy of Nation’s leader Rahul Gandhi but they will never be successful in erasing his idea of India Rahul Gandhi is a staunch follower of truth, unity, communal harmony and democracy. He carries forward the legacy of great leaders who sacrificed to keep India united and strong,” Alemao said while addressing the protesters.

He condemned the suspension of the MPs by what he called the “dictatorial” BJP government.

Congress State president, Amit Patkar, AAP State convenor Amit Palekar, NCP State President and former minister Jose Philip D’Souza, Shiv Sena’s Jitesh Kamat, TMC’s Tanoj Adwalpalkar besides MLAs -- Carlos Alvares-Ferreira and Altone D’Costa -- were prominent among several dozen protesters.
