The team of Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP), led by MLA Viresh Borkar, on Friday stormed the PWD (Roads and Bridges) office at Sanguem and demanded immediate repair works on the bridges in the tauka, including the construction of retaining walls for the bridge at Taripanto and railings for the bridges at Mugoli, Zamgall, Orcotto, and other places.
The group pointed out that, in the absence of railings and retaining walls, the use of the bridges at Sanguem is made precarious.
The team recalled the tragic accident at Taripanto a few months back, which took away the lives of three members from the same family after the car in which they were traveling plunged into the river due to the absence of a retaining wall.
The team also recalled the accident at Zamgall two days ago, which claimed the life of a 50-year-old Ramdas Gaonkar after he fell into the river, colliding with the side barrier of the bridge. At Zamgall, the railings of the bridge were missing at many places.
The team also pointed out that, despite many requests, including a written one from Sanguem Block President Gilbert Fernandes, the department has failed to clear the file pertaining to the minor works on the bridges in Sanguem.
PWD officials informed Borkar and his team that the department has forwarded the estimate to the higher authorities and that they are awaiting the sanction order to get the works done.
However, Borkar lamented the reply given by the officials, stating that the government has been spending a colossal sum of money on VIP visits to Goa, but when it comes to spending funds on much-needed works, the department requires sanction orders, which is highly unwarranted, claimed Borkar.
