BICHOLIM
Water supply from the Tillari canal has been restored to Sal village in Bicholim taluka, after a sharp drop in water supply in the last few days had affected chilli, banana and other plantations in Sal village.
Farmers from Sal stated that 600 cubic metres of water was earlier released to their plantations from the Tillari canal, but since the past few days, the water supply dropped to 300 cubic metres.
The drop in water supply had seriously affected their plantations.
Unhappy over the drop in water supply, the aggrieved farmers contacted local MLA Rajesh Patnekar and on learning of the water shortage, Patnekar took up the matter with WRD Minister Vinod Paliencar.
Acting on his requests, the officials on Monday evening released water to the desired capacity, much to the cheer of the farmers.
Speaking to the media, the farmers said they have undertaken different cultivations this year and blamed the Tillari water authorities for causing them problems.
When contacted, a WRD engineer Rangraju confirmed there had been a 50% drop in water supply by Tillari canal authorities to Sal, but added that the problem was rectified on Monday evening with greater quantities of water being supplied to the affected farmers.
He also added that some water had been diverted to Bardez taluka to meet their demands.
